Bear Totem

Bear Totem by Amy Rattner, Watercolor, 20 x 15 x 0.75

Watercolor on Paper 20” x 15” x 0.75” Sold

In many Native American cultures, the bear is one of the most powerful and sacred totems. Bears were believed to have once been human and some nations believe that the spirit of the bear never dies. As a result, bears are considered to be great healers who can have supernatural abilities and a strong connection to the Great Creator. One of the biggest strengths of the bear is its ability to look within for answers to life’s questions. Bears hibernate each winter and their ability to rely on themselves for survival during hibernation shows us how to find harmony and balance during change.  Because they are active during the day and night, they have the strength and power of solar energy and the intuition that comes with lunar energy. Bears are also considered to be independent leaders and fierce protectors. The symbols in this piece include a chief's feathered headdress (in the background) and feathers (on his back), which symbolize leadership, honor and a connection to the Great Creator. The morning star (on his forehead) symbolizes hope and guidance, while the arrows (on his head and near his eyes) symbolize protection and defense. The heartline symbol (bear with an arrow inside) on his left front paw symbolizes the life force of all animals. The bear paws (around his neck) symbolize protection and leadership. The sun and moon (right front leg) symbolize natural harmony, which the bear exhibits by being both diurnal and nocturnal and by being a strong leader who has the capacity for deep introspection. The symbol of the Great Creator on his chest signifies that the bear is a sacred totem with a strong connection to the spiritual realm.

This piece is mounted on a cradled birch panel and varnished with UV/scratch/dirt protectant and comes framed in a black float frame. It is currently available through the WOW! Gallery  in Santa Fe.
